Sarah (3) gets to choose the outfit she will be wearing for the day and is encouraged by her mother to do so. This is Erikson's Second Stage, autonomy vs shame/doubt. The crisis is Sarah being allowed to choose her own outfit is helping her be more independent in making decisions (autonomy.) However, if Sarah's mother were to not let her choose her own outfit she would not be independent and have to rely on her parents making her doubtful in decision making.

Sarah (7) studied hard but still failed her weekly spelling test. When talking to other classmates they all passed the test. This is Erikson's Stage 4, industry vs inferiority. The crisis is that even though Sarah studied very hard she still could not compete with her classmates. This makes Sarah feel inferior to them.

Sarah (40) decided to become a youth bowling coach for the local youth league to help inspire young bowlers like her coach once did for her. This is Erikson's Stage 7, generativity vs stagnation. The crisis is Sarah volunteering to help youth bowlers to leave a legacy behind for herself and inspire others to accomplish great things like her coach once did for her. (generativity)
