    World War 1 was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by the Serbian black hand terrorists in Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914. Then Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia.

    The Tsars of Russia had been absolute rulers. The hardships of World War 1 made conditions much worse in Russia. In 1917, the Russsian Revolution happened and Tsar Nicholas II was thrown out of power. Vladimir Lenin gained power. In 1918, Lenin's government made peace with Germany but executed the Tsar and his family. In 1922, the Russian Empire was renamed Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. (USSR).

    Soldiers from each side dug trenches to avoid being pelted by enemy fire. Machine guns and poisonous gas were used by both sides and made the war very deadly. When the Central Powers won the war, they made a treaty - Treaty of Versailles - that stated that Germany and Austria-Hungary would face hard punishments.

    Economy grew quickly in the 1920's. A lot of people enjoyed great wealth. During this time period, United States was richer than any other country had ever been. Americans used their wealth to buy many new things. Such as cars, electric appliances, and radios for the first time. New art forms, such as jazz music, flourished. Thats how they got the nickname, "The Roaring Twenties."

    Communism was when the government had authority over most buisnesses. Communists promised an equivalent share of wealth for everyone. A lot of Russians were Communists. After dictator Vladimir Lenin died, Joseph Stalin took role as dictator. He ruled the Soviet Union until 1953 when he diminished people's freedom and made deathly prison camps. He was called resposible for more than 10 million deaths of his own men.

    After the stock market crash in 1929, the country changed dramatically. Many people lost their jobs because of this downhill road the country was going through. During the Great Depression basically every person had to adjust to a different way of living than what they were used to.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated President Hoover in the 1932 presidential election. President and Congress passed many new laws for relief, recovery, and reform.     During World War II, a dictator named Adolf Hitler and his German army (Nazis) treated the Jewish people very harshly. The Nazis sent Jews to consentration camps, where they were forced to work, tortured, and killed. Nearly six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. Hitler tried to abolish the Jewish population, and destroyed five thousand Jewish communities.     A political leader name Adolph Hitler fromed the Nazi party. He promised to make Germany great again after their defeat in World War 2. Hitler became the dictator of Germany and then Nazi-Germany built up its armed forces. Using all of there powers, hitler took control fo areas that were in or by Germany.

    In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack drew the United states into the war. Adolph Hitler then invaded the Soviet Union. Then the Soviet Union joined the Allies. Thousands of people were killed at the bombing.

    The Soviet Union was a communist country. The government had control over buisnesses and property. The United States was a Capitalist country. In 1945 the Soviet Union gained control of European countries and made them adopt communism.

    On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, the United States also bombed Nagasaki. Both cities were in Japan, and over one hundred thousand people were killed. The atomic bomb was the first nuclear bomb made to kill people.     During the Cold War, North Korea invaded South Korea, which became the Korean War. The United States supported South Korea with troops, and China supported North Korea.     In Southeast Asia, Vietnam had split into communist in the north of Vietnam, and noncommunist in the south of Vietnam. In the 1960's, the united states sent troops to go along with southern Vietnam and fight communism in the Vietnam War. Thousands of Americans and millions of Vietnam Citizens died. The North Vietnam defeated the south in 1975, and then the whole country became communist.
  • End of the Cold War

    End of the Cold War
    In 1991, the Soviet Union's communism disintegrated and ended the Cold War. Communism came to an end because Eastern Europeans and Soviet Union people demanded change. Because of this, Soviet Union was divided into many independent nations. The end of the Cold War marked a better relationship with the United States.
