July 14th, 1858, Emmeline Pankhurst was born into a family with traditionally radical views. Her mother often took her, at a young age, to women's suffrage meetings. Both Emmeline's mother and father had strong political views.

In 1879, Emmeline married Richard Pankhurst; a lawyer and supporter of the women's suffrage movement. Richard was also the author of the Married Women's Property Acts, which allowed women to keep earning and/or property acquired before and after marriage.

In 1889, Emmeline founded the Women's Franchise League which helped to allow married women to vote in local elections.

In 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst helped to form the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) whose members were the first to be considered "suffragettes". Emmeline's two daughters, Christabel and Sylvia, were both active in the cause.

In 1928, Emmeline Pankhurst died at the age of 69. The Representation of the People Act of 1928, establishing voting equality for men and women, was passed a few weeks after her death. Emmeline accomplished what she had set out to do; women over 30 were now able to vote.
