She grew up in a public housing development in Washington D.C. which she looks back on adoringly. The library was two minutes away; she visited and spent time there frequently.

She attended Miner Teachers College in Washington D.C. At her first job, she was a clerk typist with the U.S. Patent Office.

Eloise gets married and has two children.

Greenfield begins working at the District of Columbia Black Writers’ Workshop in the late 1960s. During 1971-1973, she was the director of adult fiction, and during 1973-1974, she was the director of children's literature. She also began to do her own writing and tried to get it published but was reject numerous times.

Eloise Greenfield's first book, "Bubbles", was published by Drum and Spear Press.

She worked towards ending racism through her writing, speeches, and supporting other authors.

Greenfield spent much of her life writing poetry, picture books, and biographies. Themes in her works include accurate, positive depiction of African Americans, especially in family life.
