  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    This event recognized that separate is not equal and discussed the opportunities for equal education to those of different races, gender, and disabilities. It was said that a violation of this was against the rights of the students.

    President Reagan signed the Handicapped Children’s Protection Act, a law that gave parents of children with disabilities more say in the development of their child’s Individual Education Plan, or IEP.
  • SPED Expansion

    Public Law 101-476 called for significant changes to Public Law 94-142, or the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. Traumatic brain injury and autism were added as new disability categories. Additionally, Congress mandated that as a part of a student’s IEP, an individual transition plan, or ITP, must be developed to help the student transition to post-secondary life.

  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a law that applies to not only special needs students, but all students within the United States. NCLB requires that students from 3rd to 8th grade (including an additional year in high school) take an annual government designed assessment in mathematics and reading. Provides funds the primary and secondary education along with other contributions to the American education system.

    It is legally required that students with disabilities be taught by teachers who are highly qualified, have obtained a state teaching license, and certified in special education as well as core subjects. The improvement act of IDEA allows for 15% of special education funds to go to general education, in efforts to assist special needs children who have not been identified yet

  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    -This act was passed in order to govern the United States education policy
    -This law replaced the previous law "No Child Left Behind" and modified some of the elements regarding standardized tests
  • Bullying Students with Special Needs in Today's Time

    -Today it has been founded that students with special needs are bullied twice as much as others
    -Students who struggle with being bullied a lot of times end up having some sort of mental health complication in their future that consists of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, etc.
    -Schools need to be aware of the symptoms of bullying and are responsible for taking action if any assumptions of bullying are to occur
