Meyer V. Nebraska
This case is very impactful. It ruled that using a student's native language to assist in their education is permissible and also provided support to bilingual education. As someone who has attended a dual immersion school, I would love to teach at one in the future. -
Bilingual Education Act
This act directly impacts the funding provided to schools to aid in
"educational programs, teacher training, developing of instructional materials, and promotion of parent involvement" (Edweek). I hope that the school I work at in the future is provided with additional support to teach EL students. -
Lau V. Nichols
I think this was a very important case to ensure that EL students were provided with immersion support. Although the court ruled that students had to be given supplemental instruction, which will impact my future EL students, it didn't set specific regulations to determine the amount of supplemental instruction provided. -
The Equal Opportunities Act (EEOA)
The EEOA provided protection from discrimination which protected people from being discriminated against based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. This directly impacts education because it ensures that education is provided to all students no matter their first language, cultural background, religion, etc. This ensures that all students have the right to education which I hope allows me to have a culturally diverse and reflective classroom. -
Plyer V. Doe
Plyer V. Doe ensured that students no matter than immigrant status were provided with free education. The impact of this simply means that I may have immigrant students in my future classroom and that they will of course be provided with the same level of education as every other student. -
Proposition 203
Prop 203 is something that affects the education of EL students in Arizona. It will impact the amount of time students are required to be in immersion classes or have immersion instruction during a "transition period". It also impacts the funding for EL students which is very important for the future education of my EL students. -
House Bill 2064
House Bill 2064 is specific to Arizona instruction. It was meant to revise how EL students were classified and assessed. I think that monitoring and assessing EL student progress will impact the EL students in my future class to help ensure they are provided with the right support and that they are progressing. -
Flores V. Arizona
This case will impact my future as a teacher. It revolves much around the amount of time students are required to have of English instruction. It will be interesting to see how much time students spend out side of the regular classroom to work on their English immersion rather than then the regular instruction in the classroom.
