    Elizabeth Blackwell was born on Feb. 3, 1821 in Bristol, England to Samuel and Hannah (Lane) Blackwell. She had two older siblings and six younger siblings. One of her younger siblings, Emily, would always follow after Elizabeth. Elizabeth would always say that she would become something hard but never said what she would become. The whole family laughed at her whenever she said this.

    It was all part of a joke, but Elizabeth was accepted into the college. All of the other students either ignored her or stared at her because she was the only woman doctor in the school. Even though she was discouraged by many doctors many times, she never gave up.

    Elizabeth Blackwell graduated as the only woman in her class. She was called up last, and everyone tried to take a look at her. The president did not remove his hat and bow for her classmates, but when it was her turn, he removed his hat and bowed in respect for the first woman doctor that graduated from Geneva Medical College.

    It was early in the morning when Elizabeth was treating a baby with a eye disease, so she did not take that much care. When she was syringing the baby boy, the liquid squirted into her own eye too. She caught the disease! That night, her eye swelled up. She thought that the swelling would go down in the morning, but it did not. The other doctors took her to the surgery room. She had to stay in bed for several days before her right eye regained its sight but her left eye never regained its sight.

    Kitty Barry was a little seven - year - old Irish girl that was very fond of Elizabeth. Elizabeth went to the orphanage where Kitty stayed on Randall's Island and adopted Kitty to have company in her lonesome days in her office. At that time, no patient wanted to be treated with a woman phisician, so no patient came into her hospital. Everyone thought that woman doctors were bad. They thought men doctors were better. Kitty and Elizabeth took care of each other too as both of them grew up.
