Named Biosphere Reserve
Due to the islands reputation for conservation efforts and future plans, UNESCO declared the site a Biosphere Reserve. -
Repsol Given Permission to Drill
Despite the island using the closed loop wind and water system harnessing the winds of the Atlantic in a efficient way, Spain gave permission for a company to drill near the Canary Islands. Drilling could damage the water, air, and animals around it, ruining the delicate environment of El Hierro.
