  • 1944 Education Act.

    1944 Education Act.
    The Act replaced the Board of Education with the Ministry of Education.
    Three tiers introduced: Primary, Secondary and Further Education
    Free and compulsory education up to the age of fifteen.
    Free education up to the age of 18.
  • Free School Milk

    Universal free school milk was introduced in August 1946.
  • ATOs' created for Teacher Training

    13 Area Training Organisations were established in England and one in Wales to co-ordinate the provision of teacher training.
  • 76 Teacher Training Colleges

    By the early 1950s LEAs had opened 76 new training colleges.
  • GCE Introduced

    The General Certificate of Education (GCE) was introduced in 1951, replacing the old School Certificate.
    O (ordinary) levels for 16 year olds.
    A (advanced) levels for 18 year olds.
  • Ministry of Education to DES

    In 1964 the Ministry of Education was renamed the Department of Education and Science (DES).

    Introduction of the Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) in 1965.

  • 1979 Education Act

    1979 Education Act
    The 1979 Education Act (26 July 1979) repealed Labour's 1976 Act and gave back to LEAs the right to select pupils for secondary education at 11. It was not fully imposed due to intense oposition.
  • 1980 Education Act

    1980 Education Act
    This Act began the process of giving more power to parents. Amongst its main provisions were:
    1, School governing bodies were to include at least two parents
    2, Parents were to have the right to choose schools and the right to appeal if they didn't get the schools they had chosen
    3, There were new rules regarding school attendance , the creation of new schools and the closing of existing ones, and the number of school places

    Followed the publication of the 1978 Warnock Report Special Educational Needs. It gave parents new rights: LEAs were required to
    1, Identify the needs of children with learning difficulties
    2, Have assessment procedures for ascertaining those needs
    3, produce 'statements' specifying how the needs would be met

    1983 General election.
    Margaret Thatcher wins the general election with a landslide in 1983. With a vastly increased Commons majority from 44 to 144.
  • NCVQ Created

    NCVQ Created
    The National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NCVQ) was set up in 1986 to promote National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).
  • GCSEs introduced

    GCSEs introduced
    The GCSE qualification was introduced this year and the first exams were sat in 1988.

    1986 Education Act part 2
    The second Education Act of contained a whole draft of new provisions for schools. It moved further powers away from the LEAs and towards governors and head teachers. It also stated that there was to be no political indoctrination at school and banned corporal punishment.

    The National Curriculum is introduced in the 1988 Education Act also known as the Baker act after Kenneth Baker.

    BTECs announced.
    In 1989 the government announced that schools would in future be allowed to offer vocational courses like those from the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC).

    A* GCSE grade was introduced this year. Only 2.8% were awarded this year. The lowest ever. I managed to get two in science.

    After the death of my father I left High School, four months into studying my A levels to get a job and take care of my family.

    I started studying part time at Burton Technical College. The course I tool was City & Guilds Sound Engineering parts 1 and 2.

    I started to study for a degree in Computer Science at the University of Wolverhampton.
