Plessy V Ferguson:
The Supreme Court case that upheld the ruling that “separate but equal” was constitutional. This case was upheld in a 7-1 decision, ruling in favor of the Louisiana law that had arrested Homer Plessy for sitting in a white railway car. The court maintained that as long as the separate facilities were equal, the segregation was not discriminatory. -
Montessori Education
A child-centered educational approach that emphasizes hands-on learning in a careful environment. Montessori education is based on the belief that children learn best at their own pace and through their own experiences. In this type of learning, teachers serve more as guides. Brown V Board of Education:
Overturned Plessy V Ferguson Supreme Court decision. The decision was unanimous and declared that state sponsored segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court agreed that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” -
Florida Teacher Walkout:
Nearly 27,000 teachers walked out of their classrooms in Florida in 1968. This strike lasted for over two weeks because of underfunding and promises to fix issues that never came to fruition. Higher pay was demanded, as well as improved school budgets. The protest ended after two and a half weeks when an agreement was reached. -
Individuals With Disabilities Acts:
Guaranteed free and appropriate public education for all children with disabilities. This allowed any disabled child to integrate into public schools. It also allowed them the ability to receive education in the least restrictive environment. Florida Education Equity Act:
This act ensured nondiscrimination across public education for race, gender and disability. The act mandates that public schools in Florida create strategies to increase participation where certain groups are underrepresented. These areas particularly looked to include math, science and career education. -
Class Size Amendment:
A Florida statewide amendment to cap student-teacher ratios. This amendment did not reach its full implementation until the 2010-2011 school year. The teacher:student ratio cap was:

No Child Left Behind Act:
A reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This aimed to improve education for students by increasing the accountability held by the schools and putting an emphasis on science based teaching practices. This saw an increase in standardized testing for math and reading. -
Every Student Succeeds Act:
This act replaced the No Child Left Behind Act and re-authorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This act aims to provide all children with fair, equitable, high-quality education in order to close achievement gaps. This act aimed to move away from the more prescriptive model that the NCLB act had put into place. -
COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a rapid shift to remote learning. This meant educators had to quickly adapt to a new platform of teaching, education and attempting to connect with their students. This epidemic completely shifted how education would be delivered in the future.
