  • School becomes mandatory

    Massachusetts is the first state to make formal schooling mandatory in 1852. Mississippi was the last state to pass compulsory education laws in 1918.

    American Federation of Teachers (AFT) formed

    AFT was formed and joined the American Federation of Labor. They fought for things like better working conditions, better pay, and academic and intellectual freedom.

    Title IX banned discrimination against women in sports. Girls and young women were now able to participate in the same athletic programs as males did.
  • Americans with Disabilities act (ADA)

    Americans with Disabilities act (ADA)

    ADA is declared law. It prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities.
