Education Reform in the United States

  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Federal funding given to states for education programs for disadvantaged students. Federal involvement was questioned becasue education is a state's right.
  • "Reclaiming our Nation at Risk"

    Federal report indicating that the US education system was not keeping up with other nations'. This could be a threat in a future. The report suggested we raise accountibility by having more rigorous standards and higher expectations, and college and universities raising requirements for admission.
  • Improving America's Schools Act and Goals 2000 Educate America Act

    State standards and tests are required by the Improving America's Schools Act. Goals 2000 provided federal funding to help states write the standards.
  • ESEA Reauthorization "No Child Left Behind"

    All states must give reading and math standard exams in grades 3-8 and once in high school. The test results are available to view on the internet. In turn, the public becomes more aware of academic achievement. Same purpose for legislation, most funds are in Title 1 for disadvantaged students. 10% of public education costs are funded by the federal government.
