    Edgar Allan Poe was born on the nineteenth of January 1809. He was born to the parents of Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and David Poe, Jr. David soon abandoned them, leaving Edgar, his siblings, and their mother, Elizabeth, alone. Edgar's mother was an actress and made her money in this was, which kept the family living. Edgar also had 2 siblings, a brother and a sister. His brother's name was William Henry Leonard Poe and his sister's name Rosalie Poe.

    When Edgar was just about two years old, his mother, Elizabeth, passed away from tuberculosis. She was only 24 years old when she passed. Tuberculosis is a disease that is caused by germs that are spread in the air. It is a disease that gets into your tissues(especially the lungs) and infects them. Without the medicine that we have today, once you had tuberculosis, it was almost impossible to get over. Soon after she died, the Allans took Edgar in, but did not adopt him formally.

    In 1829, Poe applied to West Point with the help of John Allan sponsoring him. Apparently, Poe excelled in his studies at first but then after a fight with his adopted father, John Allan, Poe's studies soon fell downwards as he stopped going to classes and chapel. In 1831, Poe was kicked out of West Point.

    Throughout the time in which Edgar and John knew each other, they didn't get along very well. One of the reasons why Edgar and John didn't get along was because Edgar constantly sent letters to John asking for his financial help as Edgar had lost much money in gambling and other ways. When John died on the 27th of March, 1834, he left nothing to Edgar in his will.

    On January 24, 1848, not too long before Edgar's death, the California Gold Rush begins. The Gold Rush started in Coloma, California at Sutter's Mill when James W. Marshall found some gold. After the news broke out about the gold that was found, many people from all over fled to California with hopes of striking gold. The Gold Rush lasted all the way till 1855.

    On October 7, 1849 Poe is pronounced dead. Previously, on October third, Poe is found delirious and was taken to a hospital. A man named Joseph W. Walker found him on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland. No one knows for certain how Edgar died, but there are many theories. Some of these theories are suicide, murder, cholera, rabies, syphilis, influenza, and cooping.
