    On May 27, 1827, unable to survive on its own, Poe enlisted in the army as a soldier under the name "Edgar A. Perry '. Although he was 18 he had signed 22.44 His first assignment was at Fort Independence in Boston Harbor. His salary was five dollars a month.

    Poe was eventually licensed the April 15, 1829, after finding a substitute to replace him in his puesto.51 Before leaving West Point, he moved to Baltimore to spend time with his widowed aunt, Maria Clemm (sister of his father ), his daughter, Virginia Eliza Clemm (cousin of the poet), his brother William Henry and invalid grandmother Elizabeth Cairnes Poe.52 At that time, he published his second book, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems (Baltimore, 1829) .

    Edgar was a very handsome boy, not very talkative. Of pleasant conversation, but rather sad behavior. He never spoke of his parents. Was very close to Mrs. Allan, and she him. He was enthusiastic, impulsive, less rude could not stand the verbal.
