    John Comenius promotes universal education

    A Czech-born teacher, he was a very early proponent of educating children, emphasizing early childhood as pivotal. Is credited with writing the first picture book for children, titled Orbis Pictus.

    John Locke, philosophic proponent of ECE

    A British empiricist philosopher, he believed children developed and evolved as a result of their environment and experiences. This established the notion that educating young would be beneficial to the grown adult and larger society.

    Johann Pestalozzi encourages large-scale education reform

    Inspired by Rousseau's teaching he committed himself to improving teaching method to be more efficent and holistic. Preached that all children are entitled to education.
  • Friedrich Fröbel coins the term "Kindergarten"

    As a title for his early childhood curriculum, one of the first of its kind, going on to be adopted throughout Europe. The term compares children to growing plants, needing nurture and care.
  • First Orthophrenic School opens

    As a result of Maria Montessori's diligent research, the first school specifically for the instruction of teachers on how to educate and interact with mentally deficient children, opens.
  • Head Start Program established in U.S.

    Created to assist low-income families in providing young children the knowledge and skills necessary to keep up in elementary school. Along with nutritional and home learning instruction for parents. Program initially consisted of an eight week summer course.
  • First episode of Sesame Street airs

    With input from the Head Start Program, research conducted by the Education department of the U.S. government, and initial funding Carnegie Institute, an educational television program is devised for young children.
  • Plato, Greek philosopher

    Living from 428-348 B.C.E.(timeline will not extend this far into past, a testament to his novelty).
    Established his famous Academy. He understood and professed the benefit to society of educating children at a younger age, setting the groundwork for Aristotle and beyond...
