    Martin Luther believed that people were able "to work out their own salvation" through the bible. He also believed that in order for people to do so they needed to be able to read the bible in their own language. The protestant reformation supported this and encouraged people to have and education so they could read the bible. (Morrison, 2014)
  • John Locke

    John Locke 1632-1704
    Is known for his theory that the mind is a blank slate. In his theory children learned from “stimulation” from their parents, and their environment (Morrison, 2014).
  • Robert Owen

    Robert Owen
    1771-1858 Robert Owen believed that you could mold a child by shaping his environment. He opened an infant school in 1816 and cared for about one hundred children while their parents worked in the cotton mills. He hoped that by influencing children at such an early age he could create a more perfect society. (Morrison, 2014)
  • Friedrich Froebel

    According to Froebel teachers are to observe children, and allow to learn when they are ready to learn. He discovered what we now know as kindergarten, a system of curriculum that utilizes a curriculum, songs, and educational games. (Morrison, 2014)

    Maria Montessori
    Maria Montessori developed the Montessori system for children that had developmental difficulty such as deafness, paralysis, and mental retardation. (Morrison, 2014) The Montessori system is “a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive” (The Berndt Group,2013

    Jean Piaget Constructivist Approach is that children actively seek knowledge. Piaget theorized that children would learn by experimental learning, and having a constructive learning environment. (Morrison, 2014)

    1908-1970Abraham Maslow developed the theory of self-actualization. He believed that if children’s basic needs are met, their cognitive needs can successfully be met. (Morrison, 2014)
  • Economic Opportunity Act

    This Act enabled people in poverty the right to an education. The program Head Start was a result of this act being enforced, and now enables young children across America to have access to early childhood education. (Morrison, 2014)
