    Martin Luther
    Emphasized the importance of establishing schools to teach children how to read. Luther translated the Bible into German marking the beginning of teaching and learning in people's native language (Morrison, 2014, pg75).

  • John Amos Comenius

    John Amos Comenius
    Comenius believed education should begin in the early years because " a young plant can be planted, transplanted, pruned and bent this way or that. He slso believed that sensory education forms the basis for all learning and that insofar as possible, everything should be taught through the senses (Morrison, 2014, pg 76)
  • John Locke

    John Locke
    John Locke believed all children were born as blank tablets. Locke also believed development came from stimulation children recieve from parents and caregivers through experiences they have intheir enviroment ( Morrison, 2014, pg. 73)
  • Robert Owen

    Robert Owen
    Robert Owen believed that childrens enviroments contribute to their beliefs, behavior, and achievements just as we do today. In 1816 in New Lanark, Scotland Owen opened a school for infants (Morrison, 2014, pg 78).
  • Maria Montessori

    Maria Montessori
    Developed a system for educating young children that has influnced early childhood education to this day. The montessori methond is currntly used in over four thousand early childhood programs today. Maria Montessori was the first woman in italty to earn an medical degree ( Morrison, 2014, pg 82)
  • Jean Piaget

    Jean Piaget
    Jean Piaget believed that children developed intelligence through direct experiences with the physcial world. He also devoted his life to conducting experiments, observing children (including his own) and developing and writing about his theory (Morrison, 2014, pg 85).
  • Erik H. Erikson

    Erik H. Erikson
    Erik Erikson developed his theory of psychosocial development based on the idea that cognitive and social development occur hand in hand and cannot be seperated. He also believed that children's personalities and social skills grow and develop within the context of society and in response of society's demands, expectations, values, and social insitutions such as families, schools and child care programs (Morrison, 2014, pg 100).
  • Abraham Maslow

    Abraham Maslow
    Abraham Maslow developed a theroy of motivation called self- actualization based on the satisfaction of human needs. Maslow maintains that people don't achive self-actualization until the needs of life essentials, saftey, and security, belongingness and love achievement and prestige, and aesthetics are met (Morrison, 2014, pg 97).
