    Columbus reaches North America
    Christopher Columbus discovered North America by accident in search of a water route to Asia. This is important because it led to the settlement of the thirteen colonies. Although it forced the Native Americans into slave labor.
  • Jamestown is founded

    Jamestown is founded
    The Europeans reached the North American shore leading into the Chesapeake Bay, they selected a small peninsula and built Fort James. They built it to protect the settlement of Jamestown which was named after the king. This is important because it was the first settlement of the thirteen colonies.

    A group of Boston rebels disguised themselves as Native Americans and snuck onto British tea ships. They dumped 18,000 pounds of tea into the waters of the Boston harbor. This is important because it was one of the first rebellions against the British by the colonies.

    Congress appointed a committee to prepare a formal Declaration of Independence. The Declaration states flatly that "All men are created equal." On July 4, 1776 they adopted the Declaration of Independence. This is important because the colonists had declared their freedom from Great Britian.

    The election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln and John Breckinridge. It was mainly based around the idea of keeping or ending slavery. Lincoln believed that slavery was inhumane and his winning the election is important because it was one of the first steps to ending slavery.
