Dorothea Lynde Dix was born on April 4, 1802. She was born in Hampden, Maine. Her mother suffered from depression and her father was often away preaching. Since Dorothea was the oldest of three siblings, she helped take care of the household. -

Dorothea Dix moved to Boston when she was 12. She lived with her wealthy grandmother who helped her to follow her interest in education. She started to write books and people loved them. Dorthea traveled to England and came back to America with a wish to help the mentally ill. Dix had also learned about treatments in England and wanted to bring them to America.
