    Massacre as mystic
    This was the first major act of violence against Native Americans from the new settlers. After a long time of tension between the Pequot natives and the puritains they launched an attack against the natives killing more than 500 of them including women children. This was the start of centuries of fighting and violence against the natives.

    The Scalp Act
    While the colonies tried to expand their land many forced the natives of the land however the natives fought back. After many minor attacks Pensilvania passed the scalp act which would give monetary rewards to anyone who brought in the scalps of natives.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    While the anti slavery movement grew in the north many slaves fled there as to not upset the slave states and to keep the balance slave owners now had the rights to send agents to look for possible escaped slaves. If a suspected escaped slave was found they would be brought to a court and anyone who helped the slave could be fined 500 dollars.

    While slave states wanted to count their slaves as appart of their population the northern states did not want it to since slaves didn't have the rights of citizens the compromise was that 3 out of every 5 slaves would count to a states population.

    The United States banned the slave trade in 1808, while this did not make slavery and buying and selling of slaves illegal it did make it illegal to bring new slaves from Africa to the states.
  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    Battle of Tippecanoe
    After the treaty of Fort Wayne there was a law passed that required all native tribes in Indiana must give up some of their land. The natives opposed and joined together to fight back against the people where trying to take their land. The group agreed to a cease fire while the governor was there but broke it the next day and lost the battle.

    The Missouri Compromise
    As new states were being added to the US after the Louisiana purchase they were careful to not upset the balance between slave and non slave states. To keep it balanced slavery was outlawed above the 36º 30' latitude for the remainder of new states.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    This was an act passed by Andrew Jackson that pushed natives to give up their lands near the existing states for land that was west of the Mississippi. While some tribes went peacefully most resisted it.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    As a part of the Indian Removal Act many tribes (but most notably the Cherokee) where forced to walk the trail of tears by the US government to get to their new land. Many died along the way due to starvation exhaustion and many other factors.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    Nat Turner Rebellion
    Nat Turner was a slave who lead a strong revolt against the white people in the area nearly 60 people where killed by him and his followers. Some white people took it into their own hands to kill the members of the revolt and the rest where convicted and given the death sentence.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who was taken to a free state by his owner and took it to the supreme court to argue that because he had been to the free state he should now be free. The supreme court made an unfortunate choice and decided that slaves where property and belong to their owners even in free states. This was a major set back in the push against slavery.

    This was an act made by Abraham Lincoln during the civil war the act freed all slaves only in states that were appart of the confederacy. It was a massive step in getting slavery banned entirely.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The 13th amendment was a added to the constitution and fully banned slavery in all states this replaced the emancipation proclamation which only freed slaves in states that were a pert of the confederacy.

    This was appart of the civil war amendments it gave black people citizenship and some of the same legal protections as white people.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    Plessy vs Ferguson was a court case that challenged the Jim Crow laws of the south. It went all the way to the supreme court but they decided that it did not violate the 15th amendment as long as both races still had the same legal protections.

    15th Amendment
    This amendment gave black men the right to vote, however women would not get the right to vote until the 19th amendment.

    Battle of Little Bighorn
    A group of natives who opposed the US attempts to force them into reservations gathered in Montana. While the natives one the battle the US government did not give up and the group where still forced into reservations eventually.
  • Battle of Wounded Knee

    Battle of Wounded Knee
    There was a movement of Ghost Dances among Natives at the time, they believed that if they practiced it the gods would forgive them and create a world where they could live without the threat of losing more of their land. The police tried to arrest Sitting Bull who they though was a ghost dancer (he was not) and killed him in the process. After that they decided to try and stop the ghost dancer movement. The battle resulted in 150 natives killed and ended the Ghost Dancer Movement
