Discontent Grows Timeline

  • Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763 put territory restrictions on where colonists could settle in America. Colonists felt it took away their right to be able to travel wherever they wished.
  • Stamp Act

    This was an act passed by Parliament to tax the colonists to help pay back debt from the French and Indian War. Resulted in violent protests.
  • Sugar Act

    Strongly enforced taxes of sugar and molasses. The colonists responded with protest.
  • Currency Act

    Prohibited colonies from printing paper money. the colonists protested against this.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    This act required colonists to provide food, water and housing to British forces
  • Declaratory Act

    Stated that Parliaments taxing authority was the same in both Great Britain and America. Colonists were outraged.
  • Townshend Act

    Initiated taxes on lead, glass, tea, paper, and paint. The colonists decided to boycott British goods.
  • Boston massacre

    A deadly riot that took place in Boston. British troops fired shots into a group of people.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The colonists were protesting the Great Britain for imposing taxation without representation. The colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbour
  • Quartering Act of 1774

    Allowed British troops to be housed in private homes. Colonists were enraged
  • Intolerable Acts

    A series of laws passed by British Parliament as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party. In response the colonies formed the Continental Congress.
  • Quebec Act

    Established government for the province of Quebec. Colonists felt this was a measure of coercion.
