    People had little time to take part in leisure activities and most people spent their time on their land. This then meant that people moved from the country to towns where factories were being established.

    People got time off work on a Saturday which meant that they could participate in sports when they were off work. this was a major development in sports development. The factory owners thought that the workers should participate in sport to make the workforce happier.

    The oldest cup competition in England, the F.A Cup was created

    Corner kicks were invented and put into football games for the first time.

    The crossbar was introduced to the game and they got rid of the tape for the top of the goal.

    The Football League was founded which gave lots of teams the chance to go into big leagues and compete for trophies

    The penalty kick was introduced for the first time into games and was placed 12 yards from the goal.

    The first three figure transfer was made (£100 for Willie Groves)

    Promotion and relegation was first created in 1897 and the rule is still running today as it gives teams the chance to get to a higher division and get more money.

    FIFA was formed in Paris which went on to create tournaments like the World Cup.

    The new rule for goalkeepers came out and was that goalkeepers could not pick up the ball or touch it with their hands from outside the box.

    The offside rule was changed as now a player is onside if a minimum of two (instead of three) opposing players are between him and the goal line

    Goal-Line technology makes its first appearance at the World Cup in Brazil to make sure that we will know if the ball has crossed the line or not and make the game more fair. This meant that there will be no more controversy of wether the ball crossed the line or not.
  • New Sky Sports deal

    The new Sky Sports deal meant that they would have more access to the Premiership games and more games would be broadcasted on Sky. the deal was worth a total of £5.1b. it shows the amount of money that has been brought into the game as the first deal was £191m.
  • New Offside Rule

    The new offside rule means that any player that attempts to touch the ball in an offside position will be flagged as offside by the assistant referee.
