Development of Aviation

  • First Powered Flight

    First Powered Flight
The first ever powered flight was by a plane designed by Orville and Wilbur Wright and the name of the plane was called 'The Flyer'. This could be the most important event in the development of aviation. However, after its 4th flight or glide, it crashed and could not be repaired.
  • The Zeppelin

    The Zeppelin
A Zeppelin is a type of rigid airship pioneered by the German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in the early 20th century. Another milestone in the development of aviation, this zeppelin was used for both transporting people for commercial use and military services.
  • First around the world flight

    First around the world flight
The first round the world flight was performed by four Douglas World Cruisers and it took 371 hours of flying time to complete
  • First Commercial Flight Across the Atlantic

First Commercial Flight Across the Atlantic
The first commercial flight across the Atlantic was performed by the R100 from Cardington to Montreal. This flight would kick-start the busiest airways in the world.

    De Halvilland Comet First Flight
People wanted a faster, quieter and comfortable way of getting to places.
  • Period: to

Life Span of De Havilland Comet

The De Havilland Comet is one of the most significant planes of all time because it was the first passenger jet in the world. Early in its life it suffered reliability issues. Although they rectified this, sales never recovered and it was involved in the military until retirement.

These are not the only aspects which made it special. For example, it was the first plane to be wide bodied and it held the passenger capacity record for 34 years.
  • Concorde First Flight

    Concorde First Flight
The elite of mankind wanted to be transported in ultra high comfort and speed.
  • Period: to

    Life Span of the Concorde

The concorde was at the time, the pinnacle of aviation. With its futuristic looks it made current jets look prehistoric. Also, with its streamline design it could cover distances in half the time a normal jet would take. For example, it only took 3 hours from London Heathrow to New York JFK. This plane was specially reserved for the elite of mankind, it was far more expensive to fly concorde instead of a normal jet. As well as that, it was also extremely expensive to run and maintain.
