  • Jan 1, 1541

    First Sign Language

    Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, there were reports that the Plains Indians had developed a sign language to communicate between tribes of different languages. This was important because this is the first time signs were used to communicate between tribes.

    Pedro Ponce De Leon

    Pedro Ponce de León is credited as the first teacher of the deaf history as he developed a form a sign language and successfully teaches speech to deaf people from birth. This was important because now the people had an official teacher.
  • Juan Pablo Bonet

    Wrote the first well-known book of manual alphabetic signs for the deaf. This is important becuse this gave us alphabetic signs.
  • Cochlea

    Thomas Willis discovered the role of the cochlea in relation to hearing. This helped because this changed the way doctors learn about hearing.
  • Johannes Bohn

    Johannes Bohn refuted the theory that deaf and dumbness was caused by a connection of facial and aural nerves. This was important because being dumb was a big stereotype.
  • Rome

    Abba Silvestri opened first school for the deaf in Italy in Rome. This was important becasuse it gave poeple a school to go to where they wouldnt be treated differently.
  • First American Deaf School

    Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet – American interested in deaf education founded it. Gallaudet university. This is important because this is the first time americans could have a deaf school.m
  • Deaf State

    A Deaf State is proposed. This is important because this gave deafs a state dedicated to them.
  • Gallaudet College Opens

    Honest Abe Signs the charter for the Washington, D.C. based college for the deaf. This made the university reachable to many people and gave oppurtunity.
  • National Association

    National Association of the Deaf (United States) established. This gave Deafs a board that could help with laws and rights for them.
  • Women

    Women are admitted to the National Deaf-Mute College. Gave women the right to go to school.
  • NAD

    The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is founded. Helped Deaf Rights be made.
  • Hearing Aids

    Digital Hearing aids invented. This was a big part because people were now able to have hearing aids.
  • Sports

    The American Athletic Association of the Deaf is established in Akron, Ohio. Gave deaf athletes a right to play.
  • Kids.

    The Junior National Association of the Deaf is established for deaf youths. Gave Deaf children an association.
  • Ford

    On November 29th President Ford signs PL 94-142 into law. The law guarantees each disabled child to receive a free, appropriate public education. This gave disabled children free education.
  • Conference.

    The first Deaf women’s conference is held in Washington, DC at Gallaudet College. This helped Deaf women get rights.
  • Gays

    The Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf is established. The Alliance is for Deaf Gays and Lesbians. Gave gay and lesbian rights who were deaf.
  • Theater

    The National Theater of the Deaf is Established. This gave somewhere for deafs to watch entertainment.
  • Oscars

    Marlee Matlin becomes the first deaf actress to win an Academy Award. This showed that actresses could do anything even when theyre deaf.
  • TV

    The FCC requires that all newly manufactured televisions have the caption decoding chip. This gave deafs a way to read subtitles
  • Brooklyn

    The brooklyn international high school opened. This was one of the first american high schools in new york
  • miss america

    First Deaf Miss America crowned. This showed that deafs are just as qualified as everyone else.

    The British Government recognizes British Sign Language as a bona-fide language. This gave british deafs a right to have a language and make it be a real language.
