Alice Cogswell, the daughter of Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell, was 9 years old. Gallaudet taught Alice some simple words this then lead to Dr. Cogswell's idea of establishing a school for the Deaf. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b1AdV-Y9FU

Gallaudet travels to Europe to learn from Laurent Clerc and Abbe Sicard. He stayed for 4 months to learn.

Abraham Lincoln signed an act to establish the first federally funded school for the Deaf.

Known as the Milan Conference this declared that oral teaching is superior to the teaching of sign language. There were no Deaf individuals at this conference.

March 6 - Elisabeth Zinser is nominated to be the President for Gallaudet University and that caused the begin of a protest because the students wanted a Deaf President and Zinser was not Deaf.

March 7- The students came with a list of demands 1. Zinser must resign and there must be a Deaf President put in place. 2. Spilman (board chair) must resign. 3. The percentage of Deaf members on the board must be increased by 51%. 4. There must be no reprisals against any of the protesters.

March 11- Elisabeth Zinser resigns and I. King Jordan (Deaf) becomes President of Gallaudet University and only 3 1/2 of the demands were met. -
Spilman resigns and Bravin is named the next chair of the Board of Trustees. I. King Jordan is offically named the 8th president - and first Deaf president- of Gallaudet. "Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do - except hear!" - Dr. I. King Jordan
