  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift

    Soviet forces blocked off access to Water, Railroad systems, and roads in Berlin from the Allied-controlled areas. There were nearly 300,000 plane flights in all during the Berlin Airlift. In the end, the US stopped the USSR’s plan to hold Western Berlin hostage.
  • Creation of  NATO

    Creation of NATO

    NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is between the United States, Canada, and some of the Western European nations against the Soviet Union during the cold war. NATO also heavily encouraged European political integration.
  • Creation of  Warsaw Pact

    Creation of Warsaw Pact

    The pact was made as a result of the NATO pact and it was made by the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. It was mainly used to control economic cooperation between the states that the pact included. The pact was a mutual defense organization originally between Romania, Poland, the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia.

    The Earth’s first artificial satellite was launched on October 4th, 1957. It was launched by the Soviet Union. The satellite completed 326 orbits before it ran out of energy on October 26th, 1957.

    The Berlin wall was built to divide Western and Eastern Germany. The wall was up from 1961 until 1989. Construction of it was started by the German Democratic Republic in order to separate East and West Berlin.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was the moment that the US and USSR were the closest to a nuclear war. This event lasted about 13 days. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev ordered the missiles in Cuba to be withdrawn which ended the missile crisis.

    Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldren were the first people to ever land on the moon and the rocket was launched by the US. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong was also the first person to walk on the surface of the moon. This is where the famous quote, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” came from.

    This describes the fall of the “Iron Curtain” otherwise known as the Berlin Wall. The Berlin wall separated “free” Germany from communist Germany. Confusion over an East German directive to open the border was one of the leading factors in the destruction of the Berlin wall in 1989.
