  • Beginning of the Redesign Process

    In 2010, the province began a process to transform education in BC to better meet the needs of all learners.

    Curriculum and Assessment Framework Advisory Group is formed

    This group was comprised of BC educators, professors and individuals from several partner groups and academic institutions. The group meets four times and makes recommendations on principals and priorities to guide the changes.
  • Period: to

    Regional Sessions held across province

    Over 12 working sessions, between 30-150 participants reviewed the proposed draft material. These involved principals, superintendents, district staff, teachers, parents, school trustees, and students. Afterwards, drafts were discussed with other educational stakeholders such as parents, faculties of education, Aboriginal groups,and pre-service teachers
  • Curriculum design meetings with subject-matter experts

    Teams of educators and academics met to provide advice to the Ministry of Education on the proposed structure and content of the new provincial curriculum in a number of subject areas
  • Establish advisory groups on provincial assessment

    Specific groups comprised of teachers to focus on how newly formed competencies would be assessed
  • Post web-based, interactive prototypes for review

    Teachers from across the province are able to review and provide feedback on prototypes
  • Further input from educators

    Sixty-two teachers were appointed by the BCTF to participate in Ministry of Education curriculum revision teams during the spring and summer of 2013. These teachers worked developing draft K–9 curriculum in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Arts Education, Math, Health & PE, French Immersion, and French as a First Language.
  • Conduct classroom trials/refinement

    Trial new curriculum in classrooms across the Province.
  • Voluntary roll out

    Teachers are encouraged in the 2015/2016 school year to utilize the new curriculum, but not mandated
  • Curriculum Implementation Days

    Teachers are given one professional development day to discuss revised curriculum within school and become familiar with changes
  • Revised Curriculum is rolled out

    In September 2016, the revised curriculum was rolled out across the province for grades K-10. Grade 11/12 are awaiting their final edition, expected for 2017/18.
  • Assessment practices under review

    Still to be unveiled are the assessment supports and changes to reporting. These are still under review by a 35 person team made of teachers, administrators and school district staff.
