Kennedy's adress caught the Soviet government off guard.Soviets in the US were also bufled because they learned about the missles in Cuba through Kennedy's speech. -

Kennedy annouced his decion about the Blockade publicly to the US. He told them what the decions was and why he decided on it. -
Khrushchev's Anger
When Khrushchev in Moscow learned about Kennedy's announcement, he was angry. On the 23rd of October he blasted the U.S. quarantine of Cuba as a violation of international law. ANd he didn;t remove the missles from Cuba. His answer was that the missles were for self defense puporses to protect Cuba. -
Khrushchev's Orders
Khrushchev orders that Societ ships race towards the quaratine line. They threaten to sink any U.S vessel that tried to prevent their passage to Cuba. -

THe government put U.S nuclear forces on DEFON 2 alert for the first time in history:bombers. President Kennedy asked group of 12 advisors (ExCOMM) to help him guid through the Cuban Missle Crisis. -

Castro orderedCuban air defenses to fire any U.S aircraft that flw within range. -
Missles continue
Almost a dozen Soviet ships en rout to Cuba turned back but the missle project still oparated. Societs and Cubans worked fast to make them work. -
War almost begins
War almost broke down when Soviet forces shut down U.S fligh over cuba. THey killed the pillot, Majo Rudolph Anderson.
