The Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. The Revolution had begun and the "shot heard around the world was fired.

The Declarartion of Independence was adopted claiming the exsistence of a new nation.

The Articles of Confederation were approved. The Articles was a "firm league of friendship" with the states. It didn't get ratified right away because the formal approval of the 13 states were needed.

The Virgina Plan was presented. It called for a new government with three seperate branches: legislative executvie, and judicial. Congress would choose a "National Judiciary," and a "National Executive."

The New Jersey Plan called for a unicameral Congress with the states being equally represented. The congres would have to limit powers to tax and regulate trade. It also called for a "federal executive," or more than one person.

The Congress of Confederation sent copies of the new document to the States.

11 of the 13 States paved the way for its successor. New York was temporary capital.
