Korean War
The Soviets controlled North Korea (Communist) at the time while America controlled the South (Democracy) . North Korea/Soviets wanted to spread Communism so they decided to push down on the South Korean's land. The US saw this as a spread of Communism so they decided to help the South push back up. The war ended with the 38th Paralell (Picture shown) which devided the North and the South with the same territory that they started out with. To this day American troops still patrol the boarders. -
The Space Race
The Space Race was basically the United States of America vs. the Soviet Union on who could have the best technology. The thing that sparked the Space Race was the Soviets "Sputnik" that they launched into space. The Sputnik was a man made satelite that was launched. Now America wanted to attempt this and they launched Explorer l. It soon broke out to a huge competition. It ended in 1975 with the Sputnik docking with the Explore l. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was when the Soviet Union had planted nuclear bombs on the island of Cuba. The missiles were pointed towards to the United States of America. So the Americans decided to plant Nuclear Bombs on the country of Turkey. There was a lot of threatning about bombing each other even though there was never an actual launched bomb. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest we have ever been to a nuclear war. -
The Miracle on Ice
This was when the Soviets were a dominate team. They had crushed the Americans in a scrimage by around 6 goals. It had come to the time of the 1980 winter olympics and Herb Brooks was prepared for a long ride. USA actually flew by many of they're oppenents and ended up playing the Soviets to go to the Championship. The arena was packed with Americans chanting "U.S.A!". USA ended up beating them 4-3 and won the Gold Medal. -
The fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall split up Germany with Dictatorship on one side and Freedom on the other. The wall was used to split Germany up because of what they attempted to do in WWll. One day a group from the Dictator side wanted to go to the freedom side and actually broke the wall down. The conflict was shown when President Ronald Regan told the Soviet Leader (Mikhail Gorbachev) to tear down the wall. The Soviets and the US actually helped eachother with this conflict.
