Community College History

  • The Beginning

    During this year is when Joliet Community College in Illinois became the nation's first junior college. Even though the enrollment was low at this time. This is important to community colleges because it was the start of what they are today.
  • The Great Depression

    When the great depression happened many colleges started to get job training programs, this helped ease the widespread of unemployment. Now this is important to community colleges because this was the start of different programs coming to light and having people enroll into school.
  • Baby Bloomers

    During this time baby bloomers started to reach college age with this the enrollment in community colleges went up. With this it shaped community college for today, most women with children goes back to school to further their education.
  • American Education

    Community colleges became a major part of the education system, enrollment was at a all time high during this time. There were many factors to why people was enrolling into community colleges.
  • Partnership Training

    During this time the nationwide commission recommended that community colleges partner with employers and making faculties available for workplace training. This is important for community colleges today because it shaped away for community colleges to supply vocational training programs.
  • Enrollment doubled

    In 1965 the enrollment for community colleges was at 26% and then in 1992 it went up to 65%. This is important because it shows how the enrollment in community colleges doubled in size
  • Rise in Race

    within these years minorities who enrolled in community college was at 33%, right here this helped shaped the minorities that enroll in college in today age.
