Education Changes Timeline

  • Colonial Periode

    This periode was from 1605-1775
  • The Massachusetts Act

    The Massachusetts Act of 1647 was also knows as the Old Deluder Satan Act, this law was designed to produce citizens who understood the bible.
  • Religion

    Religion was a constant battle on wheather or not to teach it in the schools.
  • Females in Education

    Females and minorities were not able to attend school so William Berkley, the aristocratic governor of virginia supported this exclusion and railed against both free public education ad access to books.
  • Rich attended School

    During this time you could only attend school if you were weatlhy. There was not school for the regular community.
  • Early National Periode

    This periode was from 1775-1820
  • Benjamin Franklin

    1779, the academy becomes the University of Pennsylvania
  • Land Ordinance of 1785

    This law was designed to raise money by land in territores west of the original colonies acquired from Britian.
  • The constitution

    The constitution removes formal religion in the schools and establishes state responsibility in education.
  • We became the United States

    during the 45 years the seperat colonies became the united States of America.
  • Common School Movement Periode

    This periode 1820-1865
  • First Highschools

    First High schools
    1821: Boston opens the nation's first public high school
  • Free Public Schooling

    Free public schooling becomes accesible to most students.
  • Horace Mann

    Considered the Father of American Public Education.
    Conceived an educational system that sought to develop character. Believed that education would make the nation prosperous and “redeem the state from social vices and crimes”
  • Children were enrolled in school

    By 1865 50% of American children were enrolled in school and 28 of 35 states had established a state board of education.
