Cold War to the Modern Day

  • Yalta Conference

    At this conference, three nations-- United States, United Kingdom, and Russia met to discuss how the world would be like post-war. They decided to divide Germany and Berlin into 4 zones controlled by Allied nations, make Germany pay reparation , de-Nazify and de-militarize all European countries, and decide on free voting.
  • Postdam Conference

    After the Yalta conference, another conference was held in Postdam. In this conference, US had a stronger stance (after they have dropped a-bomb on Japan) to negotiate and no longer need JapanUS/Britain argue with USSR about dividing Germany, amount of Reparations Germany had to pay, and Russian influence over countries in Eastern Europe

    Chinese Civil War

    After WW2, there was a civil war in China between Mao’s Communist North and Jeishi’s Nationalist South. With the majority of China's population being peasants, the Communist party dominated China in the end, since Communism favors peasants.
  • Marshall Plan

    This plan provided $12.5 billion to help rebuild W. Europe. This was beneficial to the US because it stops communism (containment) and also gave more money to the US from interests.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine gives support for countries that reject Communism. President Truman contributed 400$ million to Greece and Turkey. This was a success because Greece and Turkey did not turn into Communism while a large part of Europe was getting turned into Communist Nations by the Soviets.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Being one of the first acts in the CW aggression, the Berlin Blockade blocked off access to Western Berlin (the Allied controlled zone). The aim was to force the Western powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and due which fought the Soviets practical control over the entire city. In response, Allies airlifted supplies into the city for nearly a year until the Soviets finally gave the blockade of the city.

    HOTSPOT: Korean War

    North Korea invades the South in 1950 with the use of Soviet supplies (tanks, guns, etc) US/UN forces came to the aid of S.Korea and push NK back up. This war resulted with stopping of fighting, and ended up back at the same boarders they began on.

    Arms Race

    In 1953, US and USSR begin an arms race. During this time period, more powerful nuclear weapons were built on both sides.US tested an “H-Bomb” in ’52 which was thousands of times more powerful than the “A-Bomb” used on Japan. A year later, USSR tested its H-Bomb, and both sides stockepiled their resources of bombs and threatened each other.

    USSR creates its own defense pact with Eastern Europe in 1955, in response to NATO, a defensive military organization for the Allied nations.

    Space Race

    Along with the Arms Race, the Space Race begins. The USSR creates ICBM’s and launches world’s 1st satellite - SPUTNIK in ’57US launches satellite in ’58. In ’60, US pledges it will land man on moon and get him back by end of the decadeIn ’61, USSR sends the 1st human into orbit. In ’62 US sends up JOHN GLENNUSSR sends a probe to VenusJuly ’69 - US lands NEIL ARMSTRONG on moon
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    1962, US U-2 spy plane photographs missile sites being set up in Communist Cuba 100 miles from Florida. USAUSSR secretly supplys and builds nuclear missile silos in Cuba. At this point, the threat of nuclear war reaches an all time high

    Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was a civil war between Northern Vietnam and Southern Vietnam. The communist North was supported by the Soviet Union and the capitalist South was supported by the US. The US joined this war, even though it was not necessary because they were aware of the 'domino theory' and feared that communism taking over Vietnam will result in all of Southeastern Asia turning into communist nations.
