Truman Doctrine is established
President Harry Truman starts the Truman Doctrine to try and contain communism to the countries it was already in. -
Berlin Blockade starts
The Soviet Union blocks off West Berlin to the Allies on the East. The U.S. starts the Berlin Airlift because of this, which drops food and supplies to the isolated people in West Berlin by plane so they will not have to surrender. -
NATO is formed
10 countries in Western Europe along with the U.S. and Canada make an alliance that if any of them are attacked, all of the other countries in the alliance will help. This prompts the Soviets to make their own alliance, the Warsaw Pact. This group has similar rules, and includes Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and East Germany. -
United Nation created
The United Nations is created to preserve world peace by promoting international cooperation. -
Korean War begins
The first proxy war starts, in which North Korea, under communist rule, fought South Korea, trying to force the capitalist country into becoming a united communist country. -
Vietnam War starts
When the U.S. tries to stop a communist election in Vietnam during 1956, but eventually gets involved in a war, trying to keep South Vietnam a separate country with out communism. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The CIA invasion plan in which Cuban exiles living in the U.S. went go to Cuba and were supposed to revolt, but when they got to Cuba, they were quickly killed or captured, as they did not revolt. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The 13-day long standoff in which The Soviet Union places enough nuclear weapons in Cuba to destroy America. President Kennedy decides to have a Navy Blockade instead of attacking Cuba. The Soviets eventually resign and move all of the weapons off of Cuba in exchange for the U.S. to stop the blockade. -
Vietnam War ends
The U.S. comes out of Vietnam with a loss. This is the first war the U.S. has lost, and it brings Vietnam back together as a full country under communism rule. -
Mikhail Gorbachev comes to power
Gorbachev becomes the leader of the Soviets, and introduces glasnost, which is a more open government than communism, giving people more freedom. -
Russian Federation is formed
After another Russian revolution, communism collapses and the Russian Federation is founded.
