Cold War Timeline

  • The Yalta Conference

    Germany is about to lose World War 2, and is split up by Britain, US, France, and the USSR. This is an example of expansionism as the Soviet Union will control Eastern Germany and the Capitalist countries will control Western Germany
  • The Marshall Plan

    Truman supported anti communists in Greece and Turkey. The US paid 400 million dollars in military and economic aid. This is an example of expansionism.
  • Molotov Plan

    Countries who aligned with the Soviet Union instead of the US for support and security. These countries included the USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and East Germany. This is an example of expansionism.
  • Brussels Treaty

    Britain, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed a treaty that would assist one another if they were attacked by the Soviet Union. This is an example of expansionism.
  • NATO

    Security Treaty amongst Britain, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the US. An example of expansionism.
  • Period: to

    Korean War

    Soviet backed North Korea crosses the 38th parallel into US backed South Korea. This an example of expansionism and proxy war.
  • Vietnam War

    A communist named Ho Chi Min fought against French colonizers and won. South Vietnam remained capitalist. North Vietnam became communist. In 1956, the US starts sending weapons. The war claimed over half a million lives. The Communist North, with the help of the Soviets and Chinese, wins. This is an example of proxy war.
  • Warsaw Pact

    A defense treaty including the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania. An example of expansionism.
  • Hungarian Revolution

    Started as a student led demonstration against the Soviets. They wanted to pull out of the Warsaw Pact. Soviets won and the Communist party was in power. This is an example of both a Liberation Movement and Containment.
  • Creation of the Berlin Wall

    East Germany built a wall that divided US aligned West Germany from USSR aligned East Germany. This is an example of containment.
  • End of the Cuban Missile Crisis

    Kennedy and Nikita Krushchev make a deal.
    1. Soviets would remove missiles from Cuba
    2. US would not invade Cuba
    3. The US would remove missiles from Turkey.
    This is an example of Brinkmanship, Expansionism, Containment, and Detente.
  • Czechoslovakia

    Alex Dubcek came into power and started bringing democracy. The Soviets retaliated, and the Warsaw Pact allies invaded and occupied the area until 1990. This an example of containment and deterrence.
  • Nuclear Arms Treaty

    The US and USSR meet in Holsinki, Finland. Agreements go back and forth for 3 years.
    1972- Anti-Ballistic missile treaty between US and USSR
    1979- Ronald Reagan, a super anti- communist was elected as US president.

  • Afghanistan/ Soviet War

    USSR invades Afghanistan to help contain the Mujahedeen (religious resistance backed by the US) The soviets retreated in 1989 and were disbanded in 1991. This is an example of Expansionism/Containment and Proxy War.
  • End of the Cold War

    The US and the USSR become friends and the Cold War officially ends in 1991. This is an example of detente.
