  • The creation of the "Iron Curtain"

    The Iron Curtain was a boundary that separated the Warsaw Pact countries from the NATO countries. The Iron Curtain was both a physical and ideological division.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was the American program to aid Europe. The U.S. gave monetary support to help rebuild European economies.
  • Forming of NATO

    The prospect of further communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
  • Forming of Warsaw Pact

    The Soviet Union and its affiliated communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact.
  • Vietnam War

    The Cold War was a fight between the United States and the USSR over the worlds resources. South Vietnam was an allie of the U.S. and North Vietnam was an allie of the USSR.
  • Sputnik

    The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite. The launch of Sputnik 1 and the failure of its first two Project Vangaurd launch attempts rattled the American public.
  • Creation of the Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall was erected in the dead of night and for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Refers to the CIA sponsored American attack of the Cuban government in order to overthrow Fidel Castro. It was a tricky plan to execute as U.S. Was not in the war with Cuba then.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall fell as suddenly as it rose. Signs of it falling started to show, but the East German Communist insisted things change moderatley and not drastic revolution. The east German citizens did not agree.
  • Dissolution of the USSR

    The Union of Soviet Socialists was formally dissolved by declaration of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. This delcaration was aknowledged the independence of all fifteen republics.
