  • soviet creation of nuclear weapons

    the soviets began experimenting with nuclear weapons in 1943 and then first tested one in 1949 this started to lead to the fear of countries getting nuked so everyone start to get them
  • yalta conference

    it was a meeting between the big 3 (US USSR and great britain) in yalta ukraine to redraw the lines of europe. it showed hope for the future as the big three were getting along it did not last long
  • potsdam conference

    potsdam germany it was held to discover what to do with german. it was decide that it would be split in four parts and the big three would get them the US and great Britain each got one and the USSR got two it was decide that free elections would be held
  • bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki

    this was the US's bombing of japans hiroshima and nagasaki they called the USSR for help at the time only to use two nukes one on august 6 and another on the 9th it was an attempt to stop japan and put some fear into the USSR. it didn't put fear in them

    1945 the USSR advanced to the 38th parallel the peace line between north and south korea. 1947 free elections were suppose to happen where have we heard that before.
  • truman doctrine

    truman created a doctrine to support anti communist forces in greece and turkey. the policy then later got expanded to support other countries who the US felt were threaten by communism. i would say it was a negative affect on liberalism as it was a choice between the US and the USSR
  • marshall plan

    george marshall announced a 13$ billion plan to help european countries who were devastated by the war recover. he figured if europe was wealthy again they would be less likely to chose communism. the soviets called it dollar imperialism.
  • molotov plan

    in july of 1947 the soviets offered their alternative to the marshall plan they urged eastern european countries to not attend the marshall plan
  • brussels treaty

    it was sided by five western countries britain,france luxembourg,and the netherlands. which later the US would join and it would later become NATO
  • berlin blockade

    the soviets began to block all possible supply route into western it resulted in that civilians had no access to food medicine or any other basic good the west responded with airlifts

    NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a intergovernmental alliance between many countries. at the time countries felt that they had to choose a side

    1954 a communist name ho chi min fought fought and won against the french colonizers who were there it then became split with the south being democratic and the north communist. 1956 the US decide to get involved and start sending more then around half a million troops people were strongly against this. it resulted in the USSR and China joining to help the north with them winning.

    the north american aerospace defense command. canada and the us founded it in fear of long range soviet attacks
  • fidel castro takes over cuba

    fidel castro lead a revolution to overthrow the us government in cuba. he also happened to be a socialist. the US then decide to not support cuba or lend them money so the USSR stepped in which resulted in the cuban missile crisis
  • creation of the berlin wall

    the eastern germany which was controlled by the soviets started to put up a wall between the east and west berlin's. the soviets said it was to prevent so called fascists to enter the east but it mainly was to stop either side from leaving
  • the bay of pigs

    the CIA began to train exiled cubans to send them back and infiltrate and overthrow castro but only say 1500 of them. they got sent in and were either shot or captured. it lend to tensions increasing even further
  • end of the cuban missile crisis

    the US sent out a spy plane over cuba. it showed medium range ballistic missiles in cuba able to hit all major cites in the US. Kennedy then order a blockade around cuba to stop soviet ships from getting into cuba only for the soviet ships to move right up to the line. in resulted in a deal being struck the soviets would remove the nukes and the US would remove the blockade and the nukes they had set in turkey and to not invade cuba.

    the US and the USSR met in holsinki finland the agreements were discussed for 3 years and ended 1972 when nixon signed the strategic arms limitation treaty (salt 1) it limited ballistic missiles to 1054. then SALT 2 happened which further limited ballistic missiles and then bombers as well

    reagan came in during 1971 (US) and mikhal came in during 1985 (USSR) they then became friends which was weird because reagan hated communism. the cold war ended in 1991

    1979 the USSR invades afghanistan in aid of the marxist afghan government against a religious group know as the mujahedeen and the US equip them. the USSR ended up losing because of the US and other arabic groups and the loyalty of the afghan people to their ethnic group but it ended in leaving a well armed group who did 9/11.
  • Solidarity in Poland

    trade union formed called itself solidarity it was against the soviets. it then became massive to the point where the soviets had to negotiate with them it didn't go in their favor it then led to a election in 1989 and a liberal government got elected which then led to a massive anti communist movement.
  • Czechoslovakia revolution

    soviet led warsaw pact troops in a invasion of czechoslovakia to stop the government from liberalising everything.they occupied the area until 1990
  • Berlin Wall falling

    the berlin wall fell which allowed both sides of germany to join back together it was also the main the symbol for the end of the war
