  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Berlin Airlift was a response to the blockade of land routes in West Berlin due to the political parties that were forming. In order to send and provide food to these areas, the United States began massive airlift. Which were filled with food, water, and medicine to the people of this city. This went on for almost a year until the Soviets finally released the blockade.

    The Joe-1, is the american nickname for the first atomic test from the soviets. It it reffered to Joseph Stalin. In 1949, the Soviets exploded its first nuclear weapon at a testing range. Creating the beginning of the nuclear arms race. Eventually in 1953, the Soviets matched the hydrogen bomb from the US.

    Korean War

    The Korean war was a war between the North of Korea and the South of Korea. It began as North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea, who is non-communist. Eventually the United States came to South Korea's aid. The war has still not ended and still goes on today, since a peace treaty has not been signed yet.

    Julius and Ethel were arrest the same year, and were put offically on trial on this day. Both were accused for sharing and passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. In 1953, both the husband and wife were sentenced to death and were executed.

    Joseph McCarthy was a senator who spent almost five years trying to expose communist in our government. It sent fear to the people, intimidating them. To a point where no one dared to speak out against hum. Not until he attacked the army in 1954 that the US senate censured him. Eventually, McCarthy's power was taken, and that scary image was gone.

    The murder of Emmett Till happened when Emmet Till apparently flirted with a white girl. There were no witnesses but the store owner who claimed he whistled and grabbed her. The white woman's husband and brother, brutally beat him, gouged his eyes out, shot him in the had, then threw his body in a river. His body was found three days later.

    Nikita led the Soviet during the Cold War, as the premier from 1958 to 1964. In this time, he had accomplished a lot in this time. He pursued a policy of peaceful coexistence with the west, even though the relationship was complicated. He preferred peaceful coexistence with capitalist countries, but still believed in communism. His power was taken, for number of reasons, and was resigned as premier and head of communist party.

    Castro takes over in Cuba
    Castro took over Cuba during the revolution Castro was a key part in this war, and overthrew Batista in 1959. A year after that, Castro nationalized all U.S owned businesses, whiles being the first established communist in the Western Hemisphere. This ruined the relationship between the US and Cuba. But it also created a relationship between Cuba and the Soviets. The Soviets believed this would bring communism to the US's doorstep.

  • U2 spy plane shot down

    U2 spy plane shot down
    Whiles spying the Soviet Union, the american U-2 was shot down. The pilot was taught to kill himself and the plane had self destruct mechanisms in case a situation like this were to occur.     John F. Kennedy elected to presidency
    John F. Kennedy became president, he did a lot for the cold war. Starting off he tried to spur a rebellion that would overthrow Castro (Bay of Pigs), it failed. Then he shared Berlin with the Soviets, and started the Berlin airlift once Soviets blockaded Berlin. Also, in 1963, him and Khrushchev signed the nuclear test ban reaty. Lastly, he got involved in the Vietnam war.

    The first man in space was Yuri Alekseyevich Gargarin, and the first man to orbit the planet. He was in space for an hour and 48 minutes. The world recognized him as a celebrity, and the Soviets gave him a title as a hero. This affected the space race as the point of this race was to prove had the better technology. This accomplishment made everyone believe the Soviets were ahead and more advanced.

    1,400 Cuban exiles did a invasion at the Bay of Pigs. It planned to be 2 air strikes against Cuban air bases, and the 1,400 men would attack surprisingly. Most bombers missed the targets. The ground unit was hopeless. Castro sent a counter attack and won. This mess made Kennedy administration determined to make up for there actions with Operation Mongoose, wanting to sabotage Cuba, and assassinate Castro.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a intense 13-day political/military standoff between the US and the Soviets, due the installation of missiles on Cuba. People thought this was the start of the nuclear war. Thankfully, everything cleared up. Soviets removed the missiles, if the US doesn't attack Cuba, and gets rid of the missiles in Turkey. This made the relationship between Cuba and the Soviets shaky.

    The US first deployed troops to Vietnam in response to the Gulf of Tonkin (Where the Vietnamese and US forces confronted). China was communist, and were control of North Vietnam. The Americans got involved into the war was because of the "Domino Theory". Thinking if communism got into South Vietnam, it'll spread to other countries. Americas efforts were in vain because Vietnam would go into communism after American soldiers leave.

    Passed by Lyndon B. Johnson, He lifted the barriers that prevented African Americans from voting. A lot of states and places ignored this law, mainly in the south, where there were a high population of blacks, and their vote could complete affect the results. Besides that, it was still thing, as in Mississippi, the voters who were black went from 6% in 1964, to 59% in 1969.

It all started after a white man(Richard), and black woman(Mildred), tried to get married but it was deemed illegal, according to the law. The ACLU appealed the supreme country, calling it "anti-miscegenation and unconstitutional under the 14th amendment. Often called a moment in dismantling the Jim Crow race laws
