Cold War Timeline

  • Berlin Blockade Begins

    The Soviets will block all road, railroad, and water traffic entering and leaving East Berllin. The US will follow The Marshall Plan and provide aid to East Berlin.
  • NATO is Formed

    NATO was formed to counter the Soviet Union's power growth. NATO was also formed the fight the spread of communism. When one nation that is a part of NATO is attacked it is considered an attack on all the nations in NATO.
  • Berlin Blockade Ends

    The US starts delivering supplies to East Berlin almost as soon as the blockade goes up and airlifts supplies, eventually, around the clock. The US had delivered 2,326,406 tons of supplies and would have continued to do so.
  • Korean War

    Armed forces of Northe Korea go marching into South Korea blasting weapons and using force to enter started the Korean War. US acted on the auspices of the United Nations quickly went to go help support South Korea against the communist threat.
  • Korean War Ends

    An armistice ends the war after three years of bloody battle and frustrations of war. The US hoped to follow the "limited war" idea brought upon by the Cold War.
  • Warsaw Pact Formed

    The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites sign a treaty which establishes the Warsaw Pact. The treaty was named as sush because it was signed in Warsaw and included: Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria.
  • U.S. Spy Plane Shot Down over Soviet Union Air Space

    Despite the Russians not agreeing to the Free Skies Treaty the US sent spy planes periodically on espionage missions to spy on the Russians. This had started mid 1956 until 1960 when the first U-2 spy plane got shot down.
  • John F. Kennedy

    JFK becomes the youngest president the U.S. has ever had on this day he was in competition with Richard Nixon. The candidates were the first to have televised debates and many leaned towards JFK because he was charming and poised.
  • Construction of the Berlin Wall

    Like the Berlin blockade the Berlin wall will do much of the same, but forcefully make those who are on the east side stay and those on the west keep out. To stem the tide of refugees attempting to leave Eat Berlin the wall was constructed.
  • JFK's Assassination

    JFK was assassinated while traveling through Dallas, Texas, in an open top convertible. There are conspiracies surrounding how many shooters there were and why he was shot. The man accused and charged of shooting Kennedy was Lee Harvey Oswald, he was tried and convicted for the killing of JFK.
