    The Truman Doctrine
    President Truman made a policy of giving U.S aid to nations threatened by communist expension. America used 12 billion dollars to help aid Europe because it was deeply in need of repair. This helped reduce the threat of communism. (1948-1952) The United Nations were determined to relieve any conflict and it cured hungers and diseases, improved education + provided care for disaster victims.

  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade

    War between North Korea and South Korea. Korea was divided by the 38th parrallel. North Korea=communist South Korea=noncommunist. Soviets and Koreans had advanced on and MacArthur decided to plan a counterattack to push them back and it succeeded. demilitarized zone: an area with no military forces. armistice: peace treaty, agreement to stop fighting.

  • Vietnam War Begins

    Vietnam War Begins
    The US had a plan to attcack communist Vietnam but it failed terribly after a suprise ambush on US troops. 58,000 Americans died. The US and North Vietnam had a sea battle off the gulf of Tonkin. There were 4 Vietnam casualties and The US draft had selected men of certain age to be put on the frontline in battle. Ho Chi Min was the prime minister of Vietnam during the war. Viet Cong fought S. Korea and the US during the war.

  • Senator Joseph McCarthy

    Senator Joseph McCarthy
    McCarthy claimed he had a list of 205 communists in the state department. They were hunted down and arrested. He then said he had a list of communists in the army and people began to doubt him. He executed Julius and Ethel Rosenburg after they were accused of being soviet spies (1953)

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    America was afraid that the Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba. Nikita Krushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. John F. Kennedy was the president in the US during this time as well. He created peace corps and wanted America to be a caring nation. The Bay of Pigs Invasion was when CIA trained troops invaded an extremely crowded park on a bay in Cuba. Castro Guevara was the comunist leader in Cuba.

    Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. These talks were between the US and the Soviet Union about the Cold War. Nixon and Brezhnev signed a treaty on Ballistic Missle Defense and a five year freeze on sending advanced weapons. A Detente is when countries settle any arguments or tensions.
