    rivalry between the communist Soviet Union and its allies against the United States and its Western allies that began after WWII caused the start of the cole war
  • Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift
    After WWII, this was a turning point in Europe. Berlin was divided up into four separate sections. Allies put efforts into helping Berlin and carried over 2.3 billion tons of cargo into West Berlin. This lasted for over a year. This relates to the GASPIRE theme of Economic because Germany's allies came together to help get 2.3 billion tons of cargo into West Berlin.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    75,000 or so soldiers from Korea poured the 38th parallel, a boundary between the northern and southern ends of Korea. American soldiers entered the war on south Korea's behalf and attempted to make some sort of agreement with North Korea due to the fear of the alternative being a wider war with Russia and China. The Korean war was the main cause of heated conflict between the Soviets and the U.S.
  • Soviets Invade Hungary

    Soviets Invade Hungary
    After Nikita Khrushchev attacked the period of Joseph Stalin's rule, there was a popular uprising in Hungary. There was a new idea brought to the people of freedom to debate and criticize. The country broke out into lots of conflict which ended in the rebels winning and establishing a multiparty system. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of social because the people of Hungary came together and society used the new rights to freedom to debate and criticize.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    The U.S. and Soviets had a bitter rivalry to see who would be able to get the furthest into space first. It started with the soviet holding the lead. The powers continued to compete until they came together and created the international space station. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of intelectual because the U.S. and the soviets were going against each other to see who could successfully get the furthest into space which required intelleigence to figure out the most efficient way to do this.
  • U-2 Reconnaissance Plane

    U-2 Reconnaissance Plane
    The United States sent a CIA plane to spy on the Soviets. Soviets found out about it and took it out and captured it's pilot. This caused a diplomatic crisis through the Soviets forcing it's pilots to tell them that the United States CIA was sending spy planes over there.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    The United States made an attempt to invade Cuba. They went there for land, resources, and more. However, their attempt failed. They planned on having the CIA send what was meant to be the definitive strike. However this did not succeed and the invaders were embarrassingly out numbered by Castro's troops, causing them to surrender within less than 24 hours of fighting. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of geographic because a reason America wanted to invade Cuba was for their land.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    One time where there was actual attack and fighting during the "Cold War" It was a dangerous confrontation between Cuba and The United States and the countries came close to nuclear conflict. This relates to the GASPIRE theme of geographic because one reason that the U.S. wanted to invade Cuba was for their land n=and the location of it and Cuba responded with this attack.
  • Soviets Invade Afghanistan

    Soviets Invade Afghanistan
    Afghanistan and the Soviet did not agree on many views economically, socially, and more. One specific view they didn't agree on was religion as Afghanistan had anticommunist muslims, while the Soviets clearly didn't. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of religion because the Soviets didn't like that Afghanistan was a Muslim country and that was part of what lead them to want to invade it so they could recuse the number of muslims.
  • Reunited Germany

    Reunited Germany
    Eastern and Western Germany were about to reunite and came back together due to east Germany no longer being communist. This relates to the GASPIRE theme of political because the political system of East Germany at a time was communism and that was the reason Germany had been separated. Once East Germany was no longer communist, the two were able to come back together as one country again.
