The Cold War started right after the end of World War II. When Germany Surrendered, it was occupied by the Soviet Union, Great Britain, France, and the United States. The Soviet Union established a communist government in their zone, while the others created a single democratic government on their side.

Berlin was also split into four parts for each of the other countries. West Berlin was also a democratic government so West Germany sent supplies there. When the Soviets heard, this they block off all routes into West Berlin, but they West Germans started to send the supplies through the Berlin airlift. The Soviets then unblocked the routes in May 1949.

Because of Japan's surrender, the Korean Peninsula was up for grabs and it was split into North Korea and South Korea. The north was a communist regime, while the south was a democratic government. The north attacked the south and almost captured it all before the U.S. stepped in and pushed them back. China then entered and the war came to a standstill at the border before the fighting started.

In 1956, the people of Egypt took control over the Suez Canal. Angered, the West attacked Egypt. The Soviets then threatened to fight with the Egyptians, which scared the U.S. into convincing their allies to end their fight because another war was unwanted.

In 1957, a Russian satellite, Sputnik, was the first satellite ever launched into space. The following year NASA was established in the U.S. and would later beat the Soviets in the race to the moon.

Many people left East Berlin because of the jobs in West Berlin. By 1960 many people were crossing the border for work in the west and then returning home in the east. To stop this, the Berlin Wall was built and travel was no longer prohibited.

The tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union grew when a communist regime, lead by Fidel Castro, was erected and formed close ties with the Soviets. The Soviets started building nuclear missiles in Cuba. After a two week standoff, an agreement was passed that forced the Soviets to remove their missiles and forced the U.S. to remove its missiles from Turkey.

Vietnam was split into two, North Vietnam and South Vietnam.The north was a communist regime while the south was not. The U.S. supported the South Vietnam government due to its non-communist government. In the end, the North Vietnamese conquered all of Vietnam turning it into a united communist country.

After Angola won its independence from Portugal in 1975, a civil war occurred. The two superpowers, U.S. and Soviet Union, supported opposing sides in the war. The conflict lasted 16 years until 1991.
