    This was effective and sufficient because it brought necessities to the city, helping those to not back down to communist rule. Also, since it did last over a year, it is easier to see that it was a significant moment in history for those in difficult times.

    The Russians who wanted Berlin all to themselves closed all highways, railroads, and canals to make it impossible for those who live in the area to get necessary food or supplies. The hope was that this would drive Britain, France and the US out of Berlin, but instead the US brought supplies to those in the city from the air. This lasted over a year and carried over 2.3 million tons of supplies.

    The Korean War was the first military action of the Cold War, taking place on June 25, 1950. It was between communism in the North and anti-communism in South Korea, divided by the 38th Parallel. The war ended July 1950 with Korea still divided.
    This was a signigicant war because it was the first military action in the Cold War. Also, the Americans entered the war to help out the south because as we seen it, it was a threat to international communism.

    On October 4, 1957, the first manmade satellite to orbit Earth, Sputnik, was launched by the Soviet Union. There was an arms race between the two countries at this time of who could build bigger and better for the competition of who could cause more destruction.Sputnik was a surprise to the world. This was significant time for the Soviet Union because it was a first.The time period around Sputnik was a time of competition and near brinksmanship because both countries were building up on weapons.

    Fidel Castro Comes to Power in Cuba
    Fidel Castro took power of Cuba in 1959 making it the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. He had power here for 5 decades and then handed off to his brother. The US and Castro did not have a positive relationship, but the US forced a trade-embargo with Cuba since 1960.
    This was a major even to Cuba. Castro stayed in power for 5 decades and caused many people to leave. Also, because of him coming to power, he brought communism to the Western hemisphere causing it to spread farther.

    Bay Of Pigs
    The Bay of Pigs was an organized invasion planned by the USA to push Fidel Castro from power in Cuba. 1,400 American-trained Cubans invaded Cuba. These Cubans were those who fled when Castro took power. After less than 24 hours the invaders surrendered due to being greatly outnumbered.
    This was a significant day in history because those who fled from Cuba to leave Castro went back in the attempt to run him from power. This was one of few days where fighting actually took place.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    On August 15th the construction of the Berlin Wall started seperating democratic West Berlin from communist East Berlin. It was to stop those in the East who were trying to escape to the West to get away from communism. Families and friends were separated for years, until November 9,1989 when the was was torn down.
    This changed many lives. Being on the wrong side at the wrong time separated you from family and friends for years. The day the wall went down was one of the best for those in Berlin.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis is a 13 day political and military standoff between the United States and Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had nuclear weapons in Cuba, 90 miles away from the US shore. President Kennedy was prepared with a military force and put a naval blockade in case. Things were resolved when Soviet agreed to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange that the US would promise not to invade Cuba. Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove the US's missiles from Turkey.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis is a significant moment in history because it is one point where we came close to war with missiles. Thankfully the deal was made where both the US and Soviets agreed to retract their weapons or many bad things would have followed.

    On February 22, 1980, the USA was against the Soviet Union, the top winning team in the Olympic Hockey Games. The US brought home the gold medal. With all the tensions between the US and Soviets, this was a good uplifting here on the homeland.
    This was a significant time for the US because it is one olympic game that never will be forgotten. It was a "miricle on ice" as they call it. This winning was a way to boost the US's attitudes against the Soviets, and have more hope in the country.
