Germany was divided after they surrender in world war 2 and everyone agreed they had to much power at the Potsdam Conference and the Yalta Conference.     Berlin was divided into 4 sections, american zone, British zone, Soviet zone, and french zone. The Russians from the Soviet Union wanted Berlin all to themselves They blocked off roads so it would be hard for the other sections to get food and supply. But the US found another why to give food and supply to their section which was by planes and that was called the Berlin Airlift. History.com

    The Space Race was a race between the US and Soviet Union to see who could get to space first and show who had the better technology. After many tries and fails trying to go into space, the Soviet Union launched Luna 2 which was the first space probe to the moon. But America was determined to get the first person on the moon and that exactly what they did. Apollo 11, July 20, Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon!     A US spy plane was shot down and the captain was captured by a USSR plane. Our President at the time Dwight D. Eisenhower was forced to admit that US had spy planes over the USSR for several years. The USSR brought the captain to prison for 10 years. This made more tension between the US and USSR. History.com

    The Berlin Wall divided East and West Berlin. The wall went up by the German Democratic Republic to keep West Berlin "fascists" out of East Berlin. It fell on Nov 9, 1989.     The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day political and military stand off against US and USSR. USSR installed nuclear-armed missiles on Cuba, US president at the time JFK let the US know and prepared US and made sure they knew our military was ready.
