    The Red Scare (Ignore Month & Day)

    The Red Scare was a period when the US was afraid and constantly in fear because of communism. Joseph McCarthy was very against the communists in this case and often accused innocent people. For example: on February 9, 1950, McCarthy gave a speech in West Virginia and read 205 names that were supposedly communists. However, Joseph McCarthy really had no evidence to prove such a thing. This resulted in negative ways for the accused victims in society.

    The United Nations
    The United Nations came into existence on October 24, 1945. The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people. The Red Scare and when Joseph McCarthy was caught as a fraud, made people realize that we should all be equally accepted which help lead to the United Nations.

    The Truman Doctrine and Containment was Truman’s idea to not ban communism, but to stop the constant spread of it. Furthermore, more actions had to be taken to stop the spread which leads to The Marshall Plan.

    The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was an American program to help aid Europe in attempt to help stop the spread of soviet communism. This took place after World War 2, when Europe was struggling majorly because of the fall in economy. Therefore, since America’s economy was doing great, it only made sense that we used our economy to help theirs.

    The Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift was a military operation of delivering vital supplies to Western Berlin. Cargo planes delivered food, fuel, and other essential supplies during the 11 month period of the ‘Cold War’ from 1948 to 1949. The Soviet communist closed all of the surface transportation in attempt to make it impossible to access this part of Germany. This influence from the communists here, influenced the Korean War to begin.

    In fear of communists in America, many people were apart of the anti-communist community. Joseph McCarthy was a prominent figure of the anti-communists. He made many false accusations to innocent people. He would easily just select people he was suspicious of and with no evidence at all he would demand that they were in fact communists. This became known as “McCarthyism”. This describes the fearful and tumultuous time in US history.

    The Korean War

    The Korean War was a fight between the US and the Soviets, influenced by the Berlin Airlift. This lasted from June 25, 1950 until July 27, 1953. It was started by a surprise attack launched in South Korea. The Korean War resulted in division throughout Korea but had no significant impact or effect. This lead to the people’s fear of communists.

    Sputnik
    Once people were working together because of the United Nations, we all had to come together to be successful in the “Space Race”. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth’s orbit and was launched by the Soviet Union. The unanticipated announcement of Sputnik caused fear in many Americans and was a large part of the Cold War. This helped to ignite what was known as the “Space Race” between the US and the Soviet Union.

    The Space Race was the continuing competition between America and the Soviets for Space Supremacy. It ended with the fall of the Soviets.

    Vietnam War

    (Ignore month and day) American troops were directly involved in the war from 1965-1975. The Vietnam War occurred in present-day Vietnam, Southeast Asia. It represented a successful attempt on the part of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam, DRV) and the National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam (Viet Cong) to unite and impose a communist system over the entire nation. Opposing the DRV was the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam, RVN), backed by the United States.

    After being trained by the CIA, Cuban exiles invaded Cuba through the Bay of Pigs. The invasion failed because Kennedy recalled US air support at the last minute.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Though the Cuban Missile Crisis was occuring thorughout that summer, Oct. 22 was the turning point. Kennedy announced that the US had knowledge of Soviet Missiles in Cuba. He then ordered a naval blockade around Cuba to stop the Soviets from bringing in more missiles. When the conflict was settled, the Soviets pulled their missiles out of Cuba and we pulled ours out of Turkey.
