The Cuban Missile Crisis
Khrushchev gave Cuba missiles to defend themselves against invasion from the U.S. The U.S. saw this as a threat and wanted them removed. The Soviets wanted the U.S. to remove their nukes in Turkey. President Kennedy and Soviet leader Khrushchev were ready to send nukes at each other, but they eventually agreed to remove both and war was prevented.
