The Soviet Union exploded its first hydrogen bomb at the Semipalatinsk test site. It had a yield of 1.6 megatons. This began a series of Soviet hydrogen bomb testing occurring on Oct. 23, 1961. This testing had an explosion of about 58 megatons. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. The satellite was a 187 pound sphere the size of a basketball. It was launched on a huge rocket and orbited Earth at 18,000 mph. for three months. The Soviets launched Sputnik to correspond with the International Geophysical Year. This was a solar period International Council of Scientific Unions declared would be a good time to launch the artificial satellites to study Earth and the Solar System.

The U.S. Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon. There were six crewed landings between the years 1969 and 1972. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin became the first people the ever land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. He stepped out of Apollo 11's lunar module and onto the moons surface, in an area called the Sea of Tranquility. As he took his first step he said "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
