Period of extreme anti-communism in the USA. It occurred with the spread of communism in Eastern Europe, which frightened Americans into thinking that one day, communism could come to America. -
Truman Doctrine
The Doctrine came from a speech delivered by President Truman.
The cause for the speech was an announcement from the British Government stating that after March 31st, it would no longer provide military and economic assistance to the Greek Government in its civil war. Truman said he will help Greece against the communists. -
Marshall Plan
$15 billion to help finance rebuilding Europe. The Marshall Plan provided aid to the people that needed them in Europe. The economic benefit has really shown and got Europe back up on its feet. -
Berlin Airlift
The Soviets did a blockade to stop land routes in West Berlin, the USA started an airlift of supplies to the people of West Berlin -
The Arms Race
The USA and the Soviet Union became engaged in a nuclear arms race. Both of them spent billions on nuclear weapons that were never used. -
USA first hydrogen bomb
The first hydrogen bomb ever created. Resulted in the first successful full-scale thermonuclear weapon explosion. Conducted in the Marshall Islands, It was the largest nuclear explosion ever at the time. -
The Space Race
Competition in the exploration of space. This was between the United States and Soviet Union. It started when the Russians developed rocket technology and launched sputnik which was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. Eventually the USA won the space race with the creation of NASA which brought them to the moon. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Occurred when the Soviet Union began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. The USA immediately refused to allow such a thing to happen and started to negotiate. Eventually, after some heated negotiations, the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles.
