Soviet forces blocked access by rail, road and water to the allied-controlled areas of Berlin, to starve the population and gain control. The United States and the United Kingdom responded by supplying food and fuel to Berlin by air, day and night to feed the city. The crisis ended on May 12, 1949 when Soviet forces lifted the blockade of land access to the west of Berlin.
