On October 4, 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. Officially, Sputnik was launched to correspond with the International Geophysical Year, a solar period that the International Council of Scientific Unions declared would be ideal for the launching of artificial satellites to study Earth and the solar system. Sputnik was some 10 times the size of the first planned U.S. satellite, which was not scheduled to be launched until the next year. -
It was also created to place a radio transmitter into orbit around the Earth and be the first one to do it. This event eventually led to the space race where the U.S. and Soviet Union raced to get a man on the moon. I think this relates to the arms race because since they were the first to do it this created the space race. And also proved a point to the other nations that The Soviets were capable of a lot of stuff. -
The Berlin Wall was built by the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War to prevent its population from escaping Soviet-controlled East Berlin to West Berlin. Both sides of the wall had different ideologies, the East was for communism and the West was against it since it was controlled by the allies. This is Proxy war because the Germans were the ones who carried it out. And this did not make things easier for the Western allies and the Germans caused more problems with the wall. -
The Berlin wall was a barrier that surrounded West Berlin and prevented access to it from East Berlin and adjacent areas of East Germany during the period from 1961 to 1989. It divided the city of Berlin into two physically and ideologically contrasting zones. This was done because West Berlin was prospering better as it had the U.S. economy behind it while East Berlin was struggling as it had no money for the economy since it was all going into the German Army to compete with the U.S.
